Bycatch

How are pogies harvested?

Pogie fishing is done with enormous purse seine nets that encircle huge schools of fish—no matter the species. Large ships, drafting 13 feet of water when loaded, are used to vacuum pogies and all other fish caught in the nets into the hull of the boat where they are then transported to processing plants to be ground into animal feed and other products. The water vacuumed is then redistributed into the Gulf of Mexico, carrying lower oxygen than before.
