After 6 years on the full Council, Matens will continue his dedicated service to Gulf fisheries
Congratulations to Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana’s own Campo “Camp” Matens for his appointment to the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council’s Standing Scientific and Statistical Committee (SSC). The SSC is the Gulf Council’s primary technical advisory body, made up of scientists and others who are knowledgeable about the technical aspects of fisheries in the Gulf of Mexico.
As a member of the SSC, Matens is charged with developing, evaluating, and peer reviewing all technical aspects of council documents and providing recommendations on all aspects of Council management, including addressing biological, social, economic, and environmental aspects. The SSC also plays a role in stock assessment development and review.
“Camp Matens’ deep understanding of fisheries science along with his experience on the Gulf Council and his lifetime as an angler will make him an extremely useful member of the SSC,” said CCA Louisiana CEO David Cresson. “No one cares more about the well-being of Louisiana’s fishing industries than Camp, and his contributions on this committee will certainly reflect that.”
Matens is a retired mechanical engineer who worked for more than 40 years in the petro-chemical industry. He served for six years as a member of the Gulf Council from 2012 to 2018, and was a steadfast advocate for Louisiana’s marine resources, and for our recreational and commercial industries. He was replaced on the Council by John “JD” Dugas, a CCA member from Lafayette.
“I enjoyed every moment of my six years of service on the Gulf Council, and was always particularly fascinated by the science,” said Matens. “When my time on the Council ended, I felt like I had more to give to our gulf fisheries. So when I became aware of the opportunity on the SSC, I was thrilled to continue my service.”
