LDWF, Romeo Papa Boats and E&L Construction Group contribute to new artificial reef build
The Coastal Conservation Association of Louisiana, in cooperation with Chevron and the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, installed a new nearshore artificial reef in the South Timbalier 77 Block in recent weeks.
The project is part of CCA’s REEF Louisiana program, aimed at rebuilding critical fish habitat that is lost when oil and gas platforms are removed from the water. The new reef site was home to platforms that have been recently removed and were identified by anglers as desirable reef locations.
“We are honored to partner with these incredible partners again,” CCA’s VP of Development Rad Trascher said. “It is through our collaborations with Chevron, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries as well as Romeo Papa Boats and E&L Construction Group, that we’re able to rebuild vital fish habitat.”
This reef build included the sinking of 90 6’x 6’ fish houses in the 60-foot waters of South Timbalier.
South Timbalier 77 Reef is the third artificial reef completed this year by CCA’s REEF Louisiana Program, with plans for an additional seven reef projects in 2025. In the four months of the year, CCA completed Duncan’s Reef in Cocodrie and the addition to the Jacob Meek Reef in South Timbalier 165. CCA’s REEF Louisiana Program is a collaborative effort between private partners, government agencies and non-profit organizations.
Coordinates for the reef are published and available for download. For more information about this reef or CCA Louisiana’s REEF Louisiana Program, contact Rad Trascher at (225) 952-9200.
